Degree of protection of electrical equipment or IP standard
Many electronic equipment must withstand contamination, moisture and impact during use. The degree of protection, commonly referred to as IP, determines to what extent the device can be trusted with security regardless of security. |
IP (abbreviated as INGRESS PROTECTION means input protection) is a two-digit IPXY code. The two-digit code that follows indicates the degree of protection of the equipment body against water intrusion, foreign objects and user access.
The first figure indicates the degree of protection against contact and infiltration of foreign bodies and access to hazardous areas, and the second figure indicates the degree of protection against infiltration of water and liquids. The precise definition of the two sets of numbers used in this system is contained in IEC 60529. The first digit, which ranges from 0 to 4, specifies the level of protection against foreign hard objects as well as the protection of individuals. The second digit is between 0 and 2 and indicates the amount of protection against water penetration (and no other liquid). The higher these figures, the greater the protection.
